🌞 Some simple tarot history 🌚 Tarot, as a deck of playing cards, originated in the regions of 15th C. Italy. Comparing these three versions of the ‘The Two of Cups’ shown above, we’ll catch just a glimpse of its history.
The card on the left is a 1970’s reproduction of an 18th C. Swiss version of the 16th C. French ’Marseille’ tarot deck. Similar to most other Marseille variations, it features ‘two cups’ to represent ‘the dialogue of two hearts’ (our cup, or 'heart' is our full emotional being).
The middle card is a 2017 reproduction of the ‘Rider Waite Smith’ tarot deck (1909), which, as an innovation, features characters engaged in a pictorial experience to reflect the Golden Dawn astrological meanings assigned to the cards in 1888. ’The Two of Cups’ is ‘Venus in Cancer’ (passion in nurture), and the scene depicts a couple ‘committing to nurturing the possibilities of love’.
The card on the right is the TOMAR version (2024), where the astrological correspondence is annotated so we can look out for this influence (Venus, or Cancer) appearing in another part of our tarot spread. ❤️🦀.
