Terminology: 'Esoteric tarot' explored

Updated: Jun 20, 2024

A TOMAR figure looking at symbols from tarot cards in the air around them

When a tarot deck is described as ‘esoteric’ it suggests we are using it for ‘divination’ (18th C. onwards), rather than in is earlier guise as a 15th Century deck of cards to 'play games'. To perform self-divination with a tarot deck, we draw on the cards ‘esoteric’ (secret) symbols to reveal wisdom from the spiritual realm. This is bespoke information, channeled especially for us (we have asked a question, and are perforing a tarot reading), it helps us understand our mysteries so we can reshape our path.

Often, the non-physical 'spiritual realm' we are communicating with is termed as our ‘sub-conscious’ (notoriously shy, preferring images and symbols to the written word) - which includes the natural forces around us, or a higher source above, that for some reason knows more than we do (not unimaginable if we accept we don’t know everything in life). Because these forces are so ‘other’ to us they don’t speak the same language, or even speak verbally at all. To understand their messages we look to the launguage of the symbols in tarot cards. A place where the 'elements' (Fire, Water, Air and Earth), and 'numbers' have a universally understood meaning - some of these symbols suggest 'stability', some suggest being more 'dynamic', and many other ideas fall in between.

The TOMAR tarot card The Four of Wands

Taking 'The Four of Wands' as an example, if we ask for advice and receive this card, then the symbol of 'Four' (stability) tells us that the ‘activity’ (Wand/ Fire) we are applying ourselves to no longer requires our attention. That we should ‘rest easy’, because any more effort now, could actually take us in an unnatural direction. Something which sounds like good advice no matter where it came from. 🦉🌙 #tomar #tarot #esoteric #fourofwands #explained
